SKO(le Ole) at the 2019 Come Together Cup in Cologne

SKO(le Ole) at the 2019 Come Together Cup

Just Miteinander – yesterday's motto of this year's Come Together Cup was exactly what it said on the tin.

At 6:30 a.m. the first SKO people set off. With bag and baggage we drove to the RheinEnergie stadium and began setting up our SKO stand. It had to be ready, because the matches for the teams started at 8:30 a.m.

Let the games begin … and let us lose

Group stage. Everyone went onto the pitches full of motivation and the football tournaments began. The SKO team was not bad at all and so the first match ended 1:0 in our favour. After a short break it continued straight away. We put up a good fight, but unfortunately could not win another match from the second one onwards. Even so we did surprisingly well and improved compared with last year, as the team spirit was clearly noticeable this year. But it is meant to be fun above all! A shame for us all the same, because after the group stage it was over for us, just as Stefan had predicted. After 5 matches we were out. So for next year it means more training for the SKO team. Well – more time for eating, drinking and having fun!

And we had plenty of that, because the 25th CTC once again had a lot to offer and was very well attended. Whether currywurst, veggie food, cake or fresh smoothies, there was something for everyone, and the stage programme with its music created a great atmosphere during the tournaments and afterwards. Towards evening in particular the CTC turned into a big open-air party. With plenty of Kölsch and the Cologne bands Planschemalöör, Kempes Feinest, Miljö and Klüngelköpp – whose appearance for the 25th Come Together Cup was sponsored by SK-Office – everyone celebrated exuberantly until the end. Fortunately the weather played along too, so the CTC was well attended right to the finish. This colourful festival has been celebrated for an incredible 25 years now. The CTC has grown steadily, but one thing remains the same: the message behind it!

The message

The best thing about 30 May for us was that the CTC showed what it stands for. It does not matter where you are from, how young or old you are, whether you are large or small, thin or not, gay, lesbian or straight. Everyone had fun together and nobody was excluded or given odd looks. Once again the CTC showed that peaceful togetherness is perfectly possible – just miteinander! That is precisely why we at SKO are proud to be part of the event and thereby to widen the reach of the CTC message. Especially in today's times, when hatred and violence towards minorities and others are increasing again, events like the CTC are an important element in society.

The Moment of Silence

Amid all the cheerfulness and fun there was also a Moment of Silence again this year. This minute's silence was there to remember those who are no longer with us because of HIV and AIDS, and all those who have died and who meant something to the participants and visitors. It also drew attention to the subject of HIV, because HIV remains a present problem all over the world today.

The charitable idea

Finally, through donations from helpers, sponsors, companies and others, the Come Together Cup is also able to support charitable and social projects and institutions such as anyway e.V. and Aidshilfe Köln, and thereby to contribute and provide support sustainably on the other 363 days of the year when the CTC does not take place in Cologne and at Schalke. We think that is great and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who takes part in the CTC with so much energy.

P.S. The 2019 CTC will certainly not have been SKO's last!
