SponsorCup at Schalke 2019

SponsorCup at Schalke 2019

Things are heating up – from one football tournament straight into the next.

This year we were again able to take part in the SponsorCup at Schalke and, as always, showed our best and most sporting side.

For anyone who does not know the SponsorCup, here are a few brief facts and figures so that everyone knows what we are talking about:

This year's SponsorCup is the 18th tournament organised by Schalke, to which all sponsors of FC Gelsenkirchen Schalke 04 e.V. are warmly invited to play with and against each other. The matches take place right “at Schalke”, in the immediate vicinity of the Veltins Arena. The lawns in front of the club offices, otherwise used as a training ground by the Knappenschmiede academy, have to withstand the boots of around 80 teams on this day. The teams include Deutsche Glasfaser, Securitas and Stölting, but also the national team of Deutsche Post and, the highlight, the veterans' team of FC Gelsenkirchen Schalke 04 e.V.

With that we have explained everything worth knowing about the SponsorCup, and now we come to our team and its performance on the day:

After everyone set off highly motivated in the early morning, the mood was unfortunately dampened somewhat right away in the first match, as the SKO team had to cope with an 8:0 defeat. The second match had nothing good to report either, as the team was again handed a defeat, this time 7:2. But the SKO lads are not fobbed off or discouraged that easily: in the third match they showed what they can do, a win went to our team and the mood improved again (4:2).

But they wanted to build on this win, and in the fourth match they put in a magnificent result of an incredible 14:1 – which slowly gives rise to the suspicion that it must simply have been the time of day and that the SKO team is made up of people who are not morning types.

Nevertheless, because of the goal difference and the three matches lost in total, there was unfortunately nothing more than the group stage.

It was still a lovely day and great fun once again, and we would simply like to say a big royal-blue thank you to the organisers and, casually: “See you next year at Schalke.”
